Quotation
This quote is important because
it shows that Alexie’s family was poor but they were still interested in
education and reading. It lets us see how Alexia grew up in an educational
environment.
“When he has extra money, he
bought new novels at supermarkets, convenience stores, and hospital gift shops.”
(pg. 363)
This quote stands out because it
is when Alexie first learned how to comprehend reading. This was an important
time in Alexie’s life because it is would be his foundation for his writing
career.
“The words themselves were mostly
foreign, but I still remember the exact moment when I first understood, with
a sudden clarity, the purpose of a paragraph.” (pg. 364)
I like this quote because I like
how Alexie compares writing to the world. He sees things in forms of
paragraphs and this helps him learn.
“Our reservation was a small
paragraph within the United States.” (pg. 364)
This is an example of how
advanced Alexie was in comparasin to people his age. This is important
because he was born with a brain defect and was no supposed to live and
function normally.
“He reads ‘Grapes of Wrath” in
kindergarten when other children are struggling through ‘Dick and Jane.” (pg.
364)
This quote shows Alexies’s
strength and determination to succeed. It also shows his self-confidence in
himself.
“I refused to fail. I was smart.
I was arrogant. I was lucky.” (pg. 365)
This quote is important because
Alexie was not expected to succeed in writing, with being an Indian and
having a brain defect.
“Writing was something beyond
Indians. I cannot recall a single time when a guest teacher visited the
reservation.” (pg. 365)
