Allen, Berkenkotter and Murray

Allen Before You Read
In a student's writing process, there is usually a basic form of research and outlining. Students will look up their topic and get a general understanding. They will then form a simple outline of how they will layout their paper. During the writing process, students usually do not go back through what they wrote but will just leave things how they are. This is different from a professional writers process because in a professional writers process, there is more detail and time put into the piece. A professional will spend time researching and developing ideas before they outline and layout their paper. A professional will also go back to proof read and change things in their paper once they finish it. This is different than a student's paper because a student is usually writing because they ave to, not because it is their job. Although the writing processes are different, they are also somewhat similar because they both do some amounts of research and planning.
Allen Summary
In Sarah Allen's "The Inspired Writer vs. The Real Writer", Allen tries to teach college level students how to become interested in writing. By sharing events from her past as a college level english teacher, she shows us the importance of having someone who you can trust with writing help you with your assignments. Allen also tells the reader how to become more interested in writing and how to overcome struggles we may be having with it. She tells us this because she understands our writing struggles because she says how she also used to struggle with writing.

Allen Synthesis
I like Sarah Allen's article because the audience is college level english students who struggle with writing. I consider myself to be one of these students. After reading this article, I found that it compares to Klein's article "What is it When We do..." because they are both for college student audiences. Klein's article is meant to help students find better ways to research, and Allen's article is meant to help students find better ways to write. Both of these articles will be very helpful to keep in mind when doing future research and writing.

Allen Questions for Discussion
2. Allen says that the solution to the way around the idea of the inspired writer is to find out what inspires us about writing and go with it. She says that we need to stop listening to outside sources that do not know about writing. Allen says that we must overcome out writing struggles and write on our own. We need to only focus on what is important in writing. "The best piece of advice I can give you, though is to tell the Inspired Writer to shut up and let you write." (pg:33)
3. According to Allen, collusion is a form of plagiarism that is easy to stop. I believe that this is a small form of plagiarism when used the wrong way. If you are having someone edit your paper, or give you advice, do not writing down or put in word for word what they say. You must think about what they say and put it into your own thoughts and words for the paper. Take the editing and advice as tips as to what direction you should go with your paper. In the past, I have colluded with friends as well as with my parents when asking them for help with homework. Although I have colluded, I often change what they say and put it into my own  thoughts.

Allen Applying and Exploring Ideas
 2. I agree with Allen when she says that writing is a connection. She says that no matter how you go about writing, there is a connection being made. She also says that through a connection is how she is interested in writing. I agree with this because if you are going to be good at something, you have to enjoy it and feel a connection of some sort. Scholars and writers may suggest things like inspiration and motivation being the reasons to write. I also agree with these things because if you are writing on a topic you are inspired by, you may not necessarily be good at writing but you may enjoy doing it because of the topic.
Allen Thoughts
In conclusion, Allen's article has been one of my favorite ones to read. I like it because I can very much relate to the issues on students not being connected to writing. I can also relate to the subject of colluding. I like Allen's view on this topic and will remember her words next time I am editing a friends paper, or asking for help on my own papers.

Berkenkotter and Murray Before You Read
When I am getting ready to write a paper, I must have everything organized. I always have everything I need by me such as instructions and papers that tell me what to do. Also, I always have to have a calm and empty surrounding. I usually write in my bed or in a comfy chair. I do not write on paper first, but start by typing. I also usually do my writing right before I go to bed because when I finish, i am usually exhausted and can get a good night sleep.

Berenkotter and Murray Summary
In Carol Berenkotter's article "Decisions and Revisions: The Planning Strategies of a Publishing Writer", she uses Donald Murray as the subject for her study; "To what extent can a writer's subjective testimony be trusted." (pg:219). Berenkotter tells us about the different stages and how she studied Murray and his writing habits and methods. In Donald Murray's "Response of a Laboratory Rat- or, Being Protocoled", Murray is responding to the work done by Berenkoter and how he felt about the process. Both of the articles are for students to learn and see how professionals gather information and do their writing.

Berenkotter and Murray Synthesis
The articles by Berenkotter and Murray were very interesting because the reader got to see both sides of the research. Usually when reading about an experiment, we only see the results of the researcher and not the subject. I liked Murray's article better because he gave us a more humane response to the research being done and shared with the reader how he felt about the whole process. Also, we got to see the "behind the scenes" type of things such Murray's point of view about the experiment.

Berenkotter and Murray Questions for Discussion
1.My first impression of Murray's writing process was that is was odd and unusual, especially for someone who is a published writer. I believe that Murry and I have similar writing processes. When I prepare to write, I spend most of my time researching and forming. Also like Murray, I do not spend that much time on editing my work.
3.This study changed Berenkotter's understanding of the planning and revision writing process because she was not expecting Murray to act the way he did. Berenkotter thought that as a professional writer, you should spend most of your time on the planning and revision parts of the writing process. This is not what she found. She found that Murray spent most of his time on other parts of the writing process. This has taught Berenkotter that the planning and revision part is not always the most important step.

Berenkotter and Murray Applying and Exploring Ideas
1. While exploring my own writing habits, I find that I spend my time researching the information and finding ways for it to all flow together. I would characterize my level of writing experience as slightly above average. Based on the topic a hand, I believe that I can sometimes be a good writer, but can also be a very bad writer. In comparison to spending time on the writing process, I believe that I spend more time coming up with what to write, then the actual forming and editing process.

Berenkotter and Murray Meta Moment
One thing that I learned from the Berenkotter and Murray reading is that everyone has their own way of writing. Berenkotter did not expect Murray to do some of the things he did, so this shows that everyone has their own way of working and writing.

Berenkotter and Murray Thoughts
After reading the articles, I feel more comfortable about writing. I feel this way because Murray showed us that he does not alway follow the basic work and writing habits. I also do not follow the basic writing process and habits so after reading Murray's article, I am more confident that I can also be a good writer.
