Pollan

Summary
In Michael Pollan's "Farmer in Chief" he discusses the food system and everything that is wrong with it or needs to be changed. He discusses how hard it is going to be to change the American diet as well as the way farms are ran. The audience of this article can be anyone who is interested in the food industry or the economics of how food works. This article discuses how our current food system is all about making money, and does not focus on providing customers with quality healthy food.

Synthesis
Pollan's article on the food industry can be compared to Glenn's article on the farm industry and how they mislead their customers. In Pollan's article, he talks about the dark sides of the food industry and how it is a bad situation with Americans diets. This can be connected to Glenn's article because Glenn talks about how customers are mislead through doublespeak. Both articles discuss how the food industry has mislead their customers and are only making the America diet worse.

Quotation
This quote is important because it shows us how bad the American’s diet is. It also shows us how big of an issue the food system is in America.
“You cannot expect to reform the health care system, much less expand coverage, without confronting the public health catastrophe that is the modern-American diet.”
This quote is important because it emphasizes that America’s food system is all about being cheap.
“What our food system does well is precisely what it was designed to do, which is to produce cheep calories in great abundance.”
This quote sticks out because cheap oil-based food is what America is running on now, and it is not working very well.
“The era of cheap oil-based food is drawing to a close.”
This quote is important because it emphasizes the importance of needing to feel the world. It shows that no matter what changes we make to our food system, it must be available to everyone and benefit everyone.
“Can the sort of sustainable agriculture you’re proposing feed the world?”
This quote is important because the food system is such a big part of America, and reforming it must be a very precise and complex job.
“Reforming the food system is not inherently a right-or-left issue.”

Thoughts
In conclusion, I thought that this article was very informative. I like learning about America's food system and what changes have been made to try to improve it. I am aware of the food issues America is having but this article was good to read to help me understand some things. I also liked it because we discussed this issue in my economics class in high school as well.
