Before You Read
I chose these food images because everyone knows how deceptive food ads can be. These are examples of sandwiches and hamburgers that are displayed as good looking and put together. When you see this add, you like it and want to purchase the food item. When you go to purchase the food item, it is not what the ad looked like and you get angry.
Summary
In Anne Wysocki's "The Sticky Embrace of Beauty", she talks about visuals and how they are seen by people. Shea talks about adds and how people view them. The audience of her article can be students who are learning about visuals, and also people who are creating these deceptive and confusing ads. Wysocki discusses how a text is designed and created and also how women have been viewed in these ads.
Synthesis
Wysocki's article can easily be compared to Berger's article because they both discuss how women are seen in media. Wysocki talks about how the image of women can be deceptive and taken in ways that they shouldn't be. In Berger's article, he talks about how women have been seen as sex symbols and how the public views them. Both of these articles talk about how the view of women has not changed over time. Wysocki's article can also be compared to Bernhardt's article about the use of visuals. Bernhardt stresses the use of visuals in writing. This is similar to Wysocki's article because she discusses the importance of teaching and using visuals and images. Lastly, Wysocki's article can be compared to McCloud's comic article because they talk about how people can differently interpret art and images. McCloud talks about how everyone sees things differently and Wysocki's article talks about how people have different beliefs on different pieces of artwork or images.

Quotation
|
I like this quote because it
gives the reader a good idea on how the author feels about the subject. It
clearly states her beliefs and defines her argument.
|
“I’ll be arguing that approaches
that many of us now use for teaching the visual aspects of texts are
incomplete and in fact, may work against helping students acquire critical
and thoughtful agency with the visuals, precisely because these approaches
cannot account for a lot of what’s going on in the Peek composition.” (Pg.
80)
|
This quote is a good summary of
what Arnheim believes in. It is also a good synthesis of Wysocki’s beliefs to
Arnheim’s.
|
“These other approaches come out
of the writings of Rudolf Arnheim, who does- almost literally- ground his
ways of seeing: Arnheim uses our bodily experiences of moving over the earth
to shape principles for analyzing and creating visual compositions.” (Pg. 83)
|
This quote is important because
it shows Wysocki’s ability to synthesis. It shows how she can find other
authors that have similar views as her.
|
“Bang’s principles develop
directly out of Arnheim’s observations about our sense of body in a
gravity-heavy world.” (Pg. 84)
|
I like this quote because I agree
with what she is saying. I agree with the fact that the image is not being
presented as a mom figure.
|
“Even so, I do not think the
woman in the Peek layout is being presented as an archetypical mom, which is
the only category offered in Bang that at all addresses the use of a gendered
body in visual composition.” (Pg. 85)
|
I like this quote because it is
very strong and meaningful. It is one of my favorite quotes in the article.
|
“It is possible then to
understand that the existence of the strange- our ability to make things
strange so that they can stand out as worthy of thoughtful and respectful
attention- both heightens our awareness of the necessity of the day-to-day as
well as shows us the freedom we have relative to it; the one is not possible
without the other.” (Pg. 96)

Applying and Exploring Ideas
1. I think that one artwork is up for interpretation because art can have many different meanings. People tend to interpret things in their own ways based on their own views and opinions. Art is a good way to express these things. When people look at art, they see what they want to see. Different pieces have their own meanings that can be taken in many different ways. I have had different thoughts on a piece if art than my piers. At home, my friends and I would sometimes go to our free art museum and I found that we often looked at pieces differently.
Thoughts
I liked Wysocki's article very much because it was both easy to read and interesting. I liked her views and beliefs on the pieces she talked about and found myself agreeing with her lot. I really liked reading this article.
